MOVE ON
Rather than acknowledging the party's failed policies and reaching out to new constituencies, the GOP's dominant faction is retrenching around the anti-government, free-market, fundamentalist strain of Republicanism last championed by Barry Goldwater when in 1964 he steered the party to one of its most crushing defeats.

The Daily Dish | By Andrew Sullivan

ON CHENEY
Andrew Sullivan's reflections are more than just a chillingly accurate criticism of the former Veep, they hold true for many others:

It confirms the very worst of [him], and reveals just how callow, just how arrogant, and just how reckless and unrepentant [this man] is and has long been. There was not a whisper of regret or reflection; there was a series of lies and distortions, a reckless attack on a graceful successor, inheriting a world of intractable problems, and a reminder that while serious men and women will indeed move on, [Cheney] never will.

The Associated Press: Despite embargo, Cuba imports daiquiris from US

BUT WE CAN DO BUSINESS WITH THEM?
Amid calls for a fresh start in U.S./Cuban relations, sales of high-end treats and other seemingly nonessential items highlight the inconsistencies in the current American policy. The waiver is so broad that it includes beer, soda and a host of inedible items such as beauty products, artwork, utility poles, kitchen cabinets and Alabama newsprint, which totaled $6 million in sales last year.

Country Watch: France | F is for French Fry

LUNCH AS A TEACHING TOOL
France and Japan use school meals as an educational tool to instill proper eating habits and good manners. The French government, recognizing that students only eat one meal each day at school, emphasize that the purpose of the meal is to "assure an elementary formation of taste" and to help provide nutrition education. Lunches should incorporate lessons on the vocabulary of taste, regional specialties, food preparation techniques and culinary heritage, the government suggests, adding that the midday meal "is much more than nutrients and calories."

DOA: LIBERAL GOPers
Only twice since the Civil War have both U.S. senators from Pennsylvania been Democrats. If you knew that you'd understand just how far the Republican Party has fallen in its ancestral homeland. Liberal to moderate Northeastern Republicans once were as much a part of the political landscape as today's liberals from Massachusetts. Now, they live mostly in the history books. Que lastima.

Raising Bill Gates - WSJ.com

RAISING BILL GATES
Bill Gates was a headstrong 12-year-old and was having a particularly nasty argument with his mother at the dinner table. Fed up, his father threw a glass of cold water in the boy's face. "Thanks for the shower," the young Mr. Gates snapped. His parents brought him to a therapist. "I'm at war with my parents over who is in control," Bill Gates recalls telling the counselor. Reporting back, the counselor told his parents that their son would ultimately win the battle for independence, and their best course of action was to ease up on him. They backed off. They enrolled their son in a school that they thought would give him more freedom. That was the private Lakeside School, now known as the place where Bill Gates discovered computers.

YouTube - Past is present in Latin America Pt2

WHILE YOU WERE AWAY
Depressed and panicky about the election of Obama? Yeah, well imagine how we felt when Too got elected. And, our despair only worsened as his administration became engorged with the long-running cast of characters from the Viet Nam Syndrome/Watergate/Contra shadow government (Rumsfeld, Negroponte, Abrams, Poindexter, Wolfowitz, Bolton, etc.). (CHECK OUT THIS SITE FOR INFO ON THESE FOLKS) Well, as this (admittedly propagandistic) little news blurb shows, while Bush's golpe de estado centered its attention on the Middle East, the past was reconstructing itself in our hemisphere.
