Ruminating

Trump, the ghost of election-past, emerged this weekend as the debutante at the CPAC loser's ball. He was still selling - expired dates be damned - what had failed the ultimate marketing rule, demand.

And yet (my apologies, dear Elizabeth), he persists. If I were looking for some nefarious goings on, I would question how Trump got as many votes as he did and see the end result as a damning indictment of a job poorly done, of an electorate that overcame every impediment put in their way.

And, to underscore my point, some of my old notes:

"Trump was asked during a televised interview yesterday if he would 'live by' the results of the election. His response was the same as it was back in 2016. "I have to see. I'm not just going to say yes. I'm not going to say no."

Even though I've become inured to just about anything this sociopath has to say, the idea that a sitting president would say that was nonetheless stunning, especially considering his latest ham-fisted power grabs and police state tactics.

It's amazing that he said it, and, that apparently he thinks that if he loses it will be because of some evil machinations and will have nothing to do with the horrible job he's doing.

It's even more astounding that he was asked that question as being somehow a legitimate one for anyone but a despot and that we've become inured to his responses.

I was still ruminating on that when,
during one of my Facebook TDS tirades, I was asked "what will you guys do if he wins?"

And there was the other side of the flapjack. I responded flippantly that I would "throw up" and followed that up by saying that "I would be more disappointed than I've ever been in my country."

But that doesn't really cover it. The question was crushing, catching me  as flat-footed as a 60s acid flashback but this time to the disappointment and grief of the last presidential election. This buffoon, this unprepared boor, this crass lout, snatched from us a victory we felt comfortably was in our hands. We had the most highly qualified candidate and because she was female, we were on the cusp of making history, twice.

About that pancake. Come election time we will have been three and a half years into this. Trump is no longer an unknown quantity, heavens no. Maybe he's truly deluded himself into what he's thinking or perhaps he's just smack talking. Who cares or stops to figure out what he's saying anymore? The folks that hate him ignore him and the folks that love him don't really pay attention to what he says or does; that is the state of our dysfunction.

What bothered me was the Facebook question. The idea that he might win is horrifying. But It's going to take a hell of a changed circumstance or a lot more voter suppression and election stealing to change that.

What if he wins? That story is crepe thin. How can anybody truly think that he can win given the circumstances as they exist right now? It was bad enough beforehand; he was counting on as he said the shit getting worse after he left.
