CUBAN ART SHOW RECEPTION PHOTOS POSTED
Click on the heading to see the photos from the reception last week at the Cathedral Square Gallery. Many thanks to Robert Zimlich, Jill Shinault and Bob Schaeffer (and Carlos Soto for taking most of the pictures).
MEDIUM IS THE MASSAGE
The British Broadcasting Corporation has apologized to the White House for its broadcast Wednesday night of a live Oval Office feed showing President George W. Bush preparing for his speech announcing the start of the Iraqi war. Administration officials are apparently steamed because Bush was seen having his hair primped and readied by a female stylist armed with a comb and hairspray. Below you'll find a screen grab from the BBC feed as well as a 10-second snippet from the unauthorized TV transmission.

IS THE WAR ON IRAQ LAWFUL?
By MICHAEL C. DORF ?

Is the war to disarm and dislodge Saddam Hussein justified under international law? Has it been adequately authorized under U.S. law, with proper Congressional approval?
...Under international law, force is authorized in essentially two or, at most, three circumstances....

Interactive Iraq War Map
As if life hasn't gotten bizarre enough, here is an interactive map of the war. Kinda like we Southerners are used to with hurricane tracking charts. Someone needs to have their Nintendos taken away from them!

HAWKS CIRCLING FOR NEW TARGETS
Even as President Bush struggles against robust international opposition to launch a regime-toppling invasion of Iraq, some of the strongest and earliest supporters of military action against Saddam Hussein are already looking ahead to the next target.

MEDIA WATCHDOGS CAUGHT NAPPING
In the run up to a conflict in Iraq, foreign news websites are seeing large volumes of traffic from America, as U.S. citizens increasingly seek news coverage about the coming war.
"Given how timid most U.S. news organizations have been in challenging the White House position on Iraq, I'm not surprised if Americans are turning to foreign news services for a perspective on the conflict that goes beyond freedom fries," said Deborah Branscom, a Newsweek contributing editor, who keeps a weblog devoted to media issues In January, for example, half the visitors to the Guardian Unlimited news site, an umbrella site for Britain's left-leaning Guardian and Observer newspapers, were from the Americas.(Wired)
WHAT TO DO IN AN EMERGENCY
The US government has a new website, http://www.ready.gov. It's another attempt at scare mongering in the style of the old "duck and cover" advice after WWII. The fun thing is that these pictures are so ambiguous they could mean anything! Here are a few interpretations.

Friends Stick Together
...Barry McCaffrey, says, "They're not going to believe what we do to them . . . This would be the 3rd Infantry Division/Mechanized. They're going to drive M1A2 tanks down the street with a 120mm gun and fire five rounds into a lower floor and bring the building down."
McCaffrey’s words speak for themselves. No gloss is necessary to bring out their glaring malice and callousness. Of course, what he fails to say is that families dwell in those buildings – families like those of Suha and her four sons, and her husband Karim who can’t work because of severe heart problems. During a visit, he will invariably slip off to his garden and return bearing a prim yellow rose, which he entrusts to me as if it were a rare jewel he knows I will always treasure.
